The Daylan Show
Season 4 Episode 14- Featuring David Grace
Campbell High School’s head men’s basketball coach, David Grace, joined me on the show this week! Originally from Aberdeen, Maryland, David’s stepfather was in the Army, filling his childhood with much movement. David himself is a 20 year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and he credits the military for allowing him to meet some of the greatest people during this time, helping mold him as the coach he is today.
David started his coaching journey in Hampton, Virginia at Langley Air Force Base. In the midst of actually working on becoming a referee, the opportunity was presented to him to come and coach. Working closely with Boo Williams (Hall of Famer) as an assistant coach, he continued to work his way up the coaching ranks within the world. David helped found the Arizona Magic, underneath the legendary Compton Magic. He would overtake the high school world in Arizona, winning a state title in 2004-05 at South Mountain High, leading him to win coach of the year honors.
Obtaining his first college coaching job at Sacramento State University, he sacrificed much in terms of finances and health, but he did it to reach his dream. David spent five years at Oregon State under Craig Robinson, who to this day is still a mentor for David.
Gracing the campus of the legendary UCLA in 2013, David spent an incredible five years under Steve Alford. He became one of the best recruiters in the country and sent 10 players to the NBA, as UCLA would consistently have top recruiting classes.
Currently the Head Coach at Campbell Hall High School, continuing to grow his relationships and work within the community, David is enjoying his current journey and feels he’s just getting started there.
“I want to be remembered as a person that really cared for kids, and did it the right way. Worked hard, and was a great family man. I just hope people can say I treated people fairly. Never give up on your dreams. There will always be roadblocks. It’s how you overcome them and keep fighting”.
